My two sisters and I were on vacation in Palm Springs . We visited the Survivors Park there. We shed tears of joy, hope and gratitude for such a place as this.I am a Chemo Nurse, one sister is a throut Cancer Survivor, and the third sister is a Nurse who has worked many years with Cancer. When I returned to work I presented photos of the park and sculpture. Is it ok to post them on the ward for the patients to appreciate?

I feel that a reliable online and easily accessible data base that can help cancer patients and their families gather pertinent information is a big plus. There has been a shift in the role of patient and physician. The current trend in cancer treatment is for patients to be participants in the design of their treatment. Patients often do their own research concerning therapy. The PDQ from NCI can be very helpful in this regard by providing accurate and current information.

I am interested in writing a book or blog and would like business advise from Mr Bloch. I need a publisher and an advance or grant to see me through the next 2 months to start this project. I am not a doctor but a survivor of an uncommon liver cancer and want to share my experience strength and hope with those persons living with cancer. Is there a way for me to correspond with the Bloch's or the foundation about this? Thanks, Julia

RE: The reason drug/treatment trials have such low participation.

Here are several more reasons that are just as important as the only reason you could come up with: distance between patient's home and trial's location, health state of patient, trial inclusion and exclusion criteria, timing of the patient's diagnosis/availability and the trial study period, sponsor's willingness to pay costs of the trial drug/treatment, wealth of the patient, unwillingness of the patient's insurance to cover any of the costs, travel, and lodging.

Beyond all these factors add in the type and aggressiveness of the disease of interest and you might also find the study period does not last long enough to sign up enough patients for a rare disease, or the study period doesn't last long enough to determine survival statistics.

Hello: In January 2009 I wrote a blog piece about a wonderful correspondence between a schoolteacher named Rebecca Hammann and President-Elect Obama. Rebecca, the mother of two-year old Lucy, had been delivered a terminal diagnosis and wrote on behalf of her daughter. I loved what Obama wrote back.
Early Monday morning, December 7, Rebecca took her last breath. Her sister wrote and asked me to republish the column. I did.
But the more specific reason I write is to tell Dr. Phelps how wonderful and powerful I find his work to be. I am now in my 20th year of living with HIV, and I am an artist (as well as attorney/advocate), and have found that there is something powerfully redemptive about art and illness. Or, put another way,the special sweetness of art to those who have lost the wonderful luxury of taking their good, stable health for granted.

So, Dr. Phelps, or Dale, if I may, I must confess that I have taken the liberty of using a couple of your wonderful images along with the post. (With attribution, of course.) I felt that you wouldn't mind.

It's up at www.growingintothemystery.com. Take a look. May we all be blessed.

In a spirit of gratitude from the heart,
